Frequently asked questions:
When do I need my tires replaced?
You may need new tires when the tread is worn down to 2/32", the tires are damaged, or your vehicle is not handling safely. Signs it may be time for new tires include:
- Low tread depth
- Cracks, bulges, or other visible damage
- Uneven tread wear
- Vibration or unusual tire noise
- Poor traction in rain, snow, or wet conditions
If you are not sure, stop by Joe’s for a tire inspection. We can check your tread depth, inspect for damage, and help you decide whether you need a repair or replacement. NHTSA says tires are not safe once tread reaches 2/32", and it also advises paying attention to physical damage, irregular wear, and changes in tire performance.
Do winter tires really make a difference?
Yes. Winter tires can make a major difference in cold weather. They are designed to stay flexible in low temperatures and provide better traction, braking, and control on snow, ice, slush, wet roads, and cold pavement than all-season or summer tires. Michelin says winter tires are built to perform when temperatures drop below 45°F, and Continental says their cold-weather compound stays pliable in freezing conditions for better grip.
Why winter tires help:
- Better grip in cold weather
- Shorter stopping distances on snow and ice
- More control when turning and braking
- Improved confidence in winter driving conditions
In Tire Rack testing on glare ice from 10 mph, winter tires stopped in about 21 feet, compared with about 40 feet for all-season tires and about 47 feet for summer tires.
If you drive in Minnesota winters, winter tires can be a smart upgrade for safety, control, and peace of mind.
